Healing
Year: 2012
Medium: Acryl and oil pastel on Canvas
Size: 40cm x 50cm
This painting tells the story of a tree that has endured fire. The flames hollowed out its trunk, leaving a deep cavity where living wood once stood. From the outside, the damage might appear final — a tree scarred and weakened by what it has been through.
Yet beside the tree flows a quiet stream of living water.
Though the fire burned through its center, the tree’s roots still reach into the nourishing water. Slowly, life begins to move upward again through the trunk, past the hollowed space where ashes once gathered. What seemed like permanent damage becomes part of a deeper story of renewal. New leaves appear, blossoms unfold, and the tree begins to bear life again.
The hollow center, once a mark of destruction, becomes something unexpected. Instead of remaining only a wound, it turns into a sheltered space — a place where others can rest safely. What once symbolized loss now offers protection and refuge.
This painting reflects how trauma can leave deep marks on our lives. There are seasons when parts of us feel burnt out or emptied by extreme experiences. Yet when we remain connected to sources of nourishment — faith, hope, love, community, healing can begin quietly from the roots upward.
Over time, the very places that once held ashes can become spaces of compassion and shelter for others. The tree reminds us that damage does not have to mean the end of life. Sometimes it becomes the beginning of a deeper strength — one that not only survives, but also creates shade, fruit, and refuge for those who come near.
